Proving tennis is so much more than a “gentleman’s game”
Our editors
Hilary Scurlock
hilary@strawberriesandscream.com
Hilary’s dream of becoming a professional tennis player ended with a brutal defeat in her summer camp under-13 Round Robin tournament. Regardless, she has a soft spot for most other tennis memories from the 90’s, most notably Jennifer Capriati’s mugshot, Andre Agassi’s mullet (fake or not), and Michael Chang’s Tiger Balm commercials. When Hilary is not waxing nostalgic about the heyday of American tennis, she’s exploring and getting to know her new city: San Diego, CA.
Erica E Phillips
erica@strawberriesandscream.com
Erica grew up watching her older brother play tennis, and was too intimidated by his skills to ever pick up a racquet herself. So she opted for the next-best thing: fandom. Erica recalls chomping on granola during Breakfasts at Wimbledon, swooning over Agassi-Sampras face-offs, and witnessing the rise and fall of the extreme scream. (Hingis, anyone?) Erica was a contributing editor at Venus Zine, attended journalism school at USC, and is now a freelance writer in Los Angeles.
Our contributors
Kim Selzman, product reviewer
Kim has been playing tennis for just a few years and has developed a philosophy that looking cute on the court is usually more important than winning. She plays tennis for fun almost every single day and spends whatever little time she has left caring for her three great kids and her wonderful, supportive, tennis-playing husband. Kim has her own tennis blog – tennisfixation.blogspot.com – where she obsesses about improving her game and acquiring the latest on-court fashion and gear!
Nick McCarvel, columnist
Nick has been a tennis fan long since his days of playing the sport against a barn wall in his hometown of Helena, Montana, as a child. Nick writes on a variety of topics, but especially enjoys WTA catfights, anything to do with Novak Djokovic, and Andy Roddick’s Twitter updates. As Contributing Columnist to S&S, Nick writes frequent pieces summarizing the gossip on tour.
Rich Rodriguez, columnist
Rich is a self-described “tennis addict” who not only plays regularly around his home base of Brooklyn, NY, but also writes the blog Down the Line! which takes a raw, uncut look into the sport. “I remember always being curious about the game of tennis and its long history. But the player who really drew me into the sport was Monica Seles. She was a revelation in every sense of the word –a uniquely powerful game, unabashedly confident yet personable, and a style maven to boot. I said to myself, ‘That’s the kinda girl I want to be when I grow up!’”
