Match Points Evening Edition, 9/2/10: Put That On A T-Shirt And Wear It
The last few days at Flushing Meadows have been a lesson in “anything can happen.” Besides the surprising upsets, highly colorful commentary, and on-court meltdowns, the fans have even brought it. Really, New York. A fight?
There’s been nary a dull moment at the U.S. Open that wasn’t promptly met with something gossip-worthy. Way to keep it exciting, we say. Now, to the points!
- If you’re still drinking in the details of Andy’s tantrum, here’s a bit more juice. A pre-Open interview with his coach, Larry Stefanki; a play-by-play analysis of how Tipsy defeated our fallen hero; and an awkward photo of that hug at the end of the match. [NY Times, Great Tennis Photos]
- In other HOLY CRAP upset news. Here’s a breakdown of how Capra breezed past Rezai, and a lament over Davydenko’s loss. [NY Times]
- At least he took it lightly and threw back a few with our friends at TSF. [Tennis Served Fresh]
- After collapsing from a concussion during her singles match, Vika has decided to sit out the doubles tournament as well. [NY Times]
- Here’s a surprise. James Blake is a Mets fan. (Sarcasm!) [NY Times]
- Apparently there were some fans who got so fired up during the early sets of Djoko’s match, they just had to throw punches. Nole later commented: “I hope it was not Serbian up there.” [Go To Tennis Blog]
- For more great quotes from yesterday, including Nole’s infamous, “I have something else between my legs,” check out DtL’s “He Said, She Said” or the U.S. Open’s own video archives. [DtL, USOpen.org]
- Video: Finally, what could be smoother and sweeter than Roger Federer? The answer: Roger + chocolate. Bon Appetit. [Great Tennis Photos]
Oh and—surprise!
