Fan Scoop: Venus Williams’ Book Signing

I always looked forward to watching Wimbledon every summer. There was just something about the game of tennis, and watching the Williams’ sisters in particular, that was captivating. When I found out that Venus Williams was holding a book signing in Philadelphia this summer, I knew I had to attend.

The signing was at Borders in Center City, Philadelphia. I was only one in a crowd that filled the room waiting to see Venus. Just spanning the crowd, which consisted of everyone from young girls to older women, you could tell that she really transpired generations; she was more than just a tennis star, but a role model, as well.

All of a sudden, she arrived and excitement filled the air. She was there to meet her fans and sign her book, “Come To Win: Business Leaders, Artists, Doctors, and Other Visionaries on How Sports Can Help You Top Your Profession.” I was waiting anxiously in line to meet someone who I had just watched compete in Wimbledon the week before; now, she was a few feet away from me.

When I met her, she was so kind and gracious. She listened as I told her how much of a fan I was, was very easy to talk to and always had a smile on her face. I think I had a permanent smile on my face, as well, for quite some time afterward; it was a very exciting and surreal experience.

I just briefly began reading her book, but am excited to continue with it. It’s truly the type of book that is great for anyone, because you can relate to the personal stories being told and see how each contributor took what they learned from their athletic past and applied it to their professional life.

Meghan is a teacher in Philadelphia, PA.
